7.7.2 Microsoft Support for WebDAV

  1. Select "My Network Places" (either from your desktop or within Windows Explorer)
  2. Select "Add Network Place"
  3. Confirm with [Ok] twice
  4. Enter the URL of your BSCW home folder (or a sub-folder). It has the form http://<your-bscw-server>/bscw/bscw.cgi/0/9620 or http://<bscw-server>/bscw/bscw.cgi/:Smith. You will then be prompted for your BSCW user name and password.
  5. You may give a name to this network resource.
  6. Click [Finish].

Now your selected workspace is available as a new network resource. Several actions may be executed by drag & drop or right-mouse-button: e.g. copy, paste or delete.

You can open BSCW-documents from this Webfolder: the corresponding Microsoft Office Application will start automatically. After reading or editing the document you may save it immediately in the workspace on your BSCW-Server without saving it locally and then uploading it!!

Attention:
The Microsoft implementation of WebDAV is not fully compliant with the WebDAV RFC and this may cause some problems. The following problems are already known:

  • Even if the browser window is closed resp. the WebDAV-folder is removed the network connection still exists! If anyone else wants to setup WebDAV (belonging to his/her own user name), in spite of using the correct user name/password your private workspaces will open up! To avoid this: log out from 'Windows' ("Start" - "Log off <your-user-name>") and login in again. This is needed, if other people may access your local system. Unfortunately, the BSCW developers do not have control over this behavior.
  • Dialog boxes and error messages are sometimes misleading.
  • The RFC requests a special encoding of spaces and non-alphanumeric characters. MS Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer do not process such characters correctly. Recommendation: Use only alphanumeric names for BSCW objects when MS Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer shall be used as WebDAV clients.
  • The superior folder is shown in the current folder.
  • Drag & Drop within the same directory results in a copy operation.
Please inform us if you observe additional problems.
